Marquis E. Shattuck was born in Pontiac, Michigan on September 21, 1888 to Charles, a farmer, and Maud Shattuck. He attended Albion College, where he received his bachelor's degree in 1922, and later an honorary doctor of laws degree. Mr. Shattuck served in World War I as a corporal with the 2nd Marine Division. He received his master's degree from Harvard School of Education in 1921, while teaching in the Boston school system.
